INT. A SUBURBAN LIVING ROOM. MOM is knitting. JUNIOR and SIS are on the floor, doing homework. DAD is reading the newspaper, scowling. DAD gropes beside the cushion of his chair, surreptitiously removes a pint bottle, hiding it behind the paper.Say, Mom, your family’s counting on you! They’re counting on you to come up with something clever to do in the evenings.ANNOUNCER (V. O.)(orotund and unctuous) JUNIOR and SIS begin poking and teasing each other, Junior trying to lift her skirt. Mom sees that some diversion is needed and reaches for an anagrams game.Something that will make them forget, for a few happy hours, the monotony of work and the tedium of school.ANNOUNCER (CONT’D, V. O.) Mom stops a moment to think. Before you drag out that old anagrams game, better stop a moment and think!ANNOUNCER (CONT’D, V. O.) Mom is struck by inspiration, as if she hears a voice. Is the same old thing going to pull them up out of the dumps again this evening? Or will this be the night that Dad turns to drink, and Junior and Sis start doing nasty things to each other in the closet?ANNOUNCER (CONT’D, V. O.) Mom puts a whole mess of clamshells on the table, with paints and brushes; all brighten and fall to.Bring a little novelty into their lives! Get them making gewgaws, whatnots, knickknacks, and bric-a-brac from empty clamshells. They’ll love it! And they’ll love you for thinking of it!ANNOUNCER (CONT’D, V. O.) CUT TO:
